Lighten your load for Back to School

It's officially fall which means we're finally getting some nicer weather here in Texas! Even though it's cooler on campus, I still hate having to carry around my insanely heavy backpack all day.

Today I'm sharing the important things to bring, and things to leave behind in your college bag, then stick around to learn how to help lighten the load of women in need.

THINGS TO LEAVE AT HOME


1. Textbooks

I'm in my first seminar class this year, which is really reading intensive. We've got two textbooks, plus tons of papers for research and stuff. I've found that most days we don't use the textbook in class, so it's such a hassle to tote them to and from home. I like to take really detailed notes before class instead of referring back to my textbook during class.


2. Laptop

I prefer hand written notes over computer ones, and even when I do bring my laptop on campus I find myself wasting time between classes surfing the Internet.



3. Colored pens and highlighters

I use to tote around a huge zipper bag of colored pens and highlighters to use in my planner. I started to realize I didn't use them most days. Instead I try to keep on black pen and one highlighter for notes and leave the rest at home. I'll typically sit down and plan out my day the night before class, so I don't really need them on me at all times.

BACKPACK ESSENTIALS


1. Your planner and college management binder

These two tools are essential for me to keep up with school work. I keep all my assignments and syllabus in my binder, and any upcoming info about tests and homework goes straight into my planner. If I go one day without these I'll definitely end up missing an important assignment.


2. Emergency Kit

I like to keep some toiletries in my backpack as a just in case. Normally I'll keep tampons, hair ties, and lotion and that sort of thing. You'd be surprised how often you really need a tissue when classrooms don't keep them stocked. Here's what I normally keep in my backpack at all times.


3. Water bottle and Emergen-C®

As I think about back to school it's easy to feel like my stresses are the most important things in the world. Small things like a heavy backpack, or traffic on the way to work can feel stressful. Unfortunately the reality is women and girls my own age don't get to go to college, or work towards a career because they have to spend hours every day hauling water just to survive. Sometimes it isn't even clean, drinkable water.

Everyday women and girl in communities of Ethiopia walk three hours per day to retrieve 40 pound cans full of water. Clean water is so important to living a healthy life, and it's something I know I take for granted on a daily basis.

  1. Great tips on what essentials you need to have with you on campus, and what you can do without! I remember lugging a super heavy backpack around during undergrad and grad school, and probably upset with how heavy it was. I can't imagine not having the opportunity to go to school but instead having to carry heavy jugs of water that might be unsafe to drink to my family each day. Thanks for spreading the word about this cause! #client
