How to not completely waste your summer

That's it, my last exam is over. And I'm not talking about grades or GPA or any of it, because it's summer. A good part of me wants to take a long nap until August, but no. Summer is the absolute BEST time to get some work done. No I don't mean catching up on Grey's Anatomy. Here's a plan for you to make your summer productive.

1. Think big picture - Figure out what the heck you want to do this summer, but make it something that will be a challenge, and bonus points if it builds your resume. It could be anything from learning how to rock climb to writing a book. Take the summer to experiment with hobbies and projects that make you more interesting, because companies hire interesting people. When I hired people to my desk at the newspaper I wanted to see writing clips a) so I could see they could string together an sentence in proper AP style, but also b) to see that they really care about the job they're applying for. What you do in your free time really defines who you are. Even spending the summer learning how to cook classic french dishes gives you something to say when an employer pulls the "So tell me about yourself" question. 

2. Make a plan - Now you know what you want to do, it's time to figure out how. Spend a few minutes brainstorming actionable steps to reach your goal. If you're wanting to learn how to play the guitar, then your first step might be to buy one, then research lessons, buy a chord book and so on. But at some point there's only so much planning and preparing that you can do. Look at your work and personal schedule and set a determined time to practice each day. Or if your task isn't as large a few times a week is fine. I use an app called timeful to help me schedule habitual actions and reminders around my work obligations. 

3. Set some checkpoints - Let's run with the guitar example. Say you set a goal of learning ten new songs. Sign up to perform at your local Potbelly's or mom and pop shop. Just walk in and ask the manager, tell em you'd do it for free. Sign yourself up for a checkpoint that can't be moved this way you have a purpose to your practice. If you're writing a manuscript, sign up for a critique. If you're creating a habit of running sign up for a race and so on. There are tons of ways for you to hold yourself accountable for your goals, just do some research and jump in with two feet.

4. Don't stress about it - Summer is about taking a break, so whatever you decide to pursue shouldn't have you stressed every single day. Make it something you enjoy, and if you realize mid July that you're a terrible hip hop dancer, delete those videos you posted on youtube and try something else. Summer gives you the time to try different things and have fun. A summer failing at disk golf is not a summer ill spent. 

[slightly unrelated bonus tip: 5. Make a summer bucket list - Yeah you may feel twelve for a minute, but making a summer bucket list of things you want to do is a great way to brainstorm things to do when you're bored. Mine always includes things like go to the drive in in Fort Worth and to a Rangers Game.  There's tons of that stuff on pinterest. Explore your city and H.A.G.S. (lol did anyone else write that in yearbooks?)
