Taking Stock: September Week one

Not gonna lie, I'm feeling exhausted after a full week of work and school. I was really good about waking up and getting my work done, but I'm not use to this pace yet. During summer I'd wake up, workout, and go to work almost every day. Now I'm doing twice as much. Anyway enough complaining.

Complaining about The Punishment Lot

If you've ever seen Weeds from 2005, there's an episode called "The punishment light". In the show the main character is a drug dealer  to a really nice gated community. Anyway, here's her explination of the punishment light (warning there's a F bomb)

Anyway, there's this parking lot at the very bottom of this picture to the right. That little cluster of three lots on the south side of Doug Russell Road, that's the Punishment lot. At the tippy top of the map is the University Center, where the news room is...

And if you show up fifteen minutes before your 10 am class, you will have to park in the punishment lot (or Hell lot, I've used both terms)

I'm pretty sure my scalp is sunburnt from having to walk from the punishment lot two or three times a week.

I can't even write the length of the trek from the punishment lot to the UC.

And the one day you have to park out there, is the day you're toeing two camera bags and a backpack full of books and your lunch because you're too poor to buy anything in the UC.

My habit for this coming week is to stop complaining, so I had to get this out before Sunday.

How to study flashcards like a boss

I freaking LOVE flashcards, especially for my spanish class which has a lot of vocabulary. Not gonna lie, they're a pain in the butt. But they're insanely helpful for short, broken up study sessions. Here's four rules for flashcards.

Rule #1 - Cut your cards in half. Cards are expensive, especially when you're using 30-40 cards per chapter per class. Learn how to write small for goodness sake and get all the info you put on it.

Rule #2 - Be concise, make sure the information you're putting on your cards is as short as possible but still accurate.

Rule #3 - Give it some color, you don't have to color code your flashcards. But by writing them in a colored marker will just make them a little happier to look at. Assuming you're being concise (see Rule #2) you'll have plenty of room on the card to bump up the stroke on your pen. (design joke)

Rule #4 - Use the The Leitner System when studying flash cards. Basically how the system works is you have a few groups of cards. As you answer cards correctly, cards move forward, and as you answer wrong cards move back. After you go through a stack, you move on to the next one. Essentially, you're reviewing cards you know and not worrying about cards you don't as much. You'll get them eventually. Check out this handy graphic!

This website goes into depth about how to use the system. You don't even need these like deck boxes though. I make different decks with my fingers so I don't have to worry about my cards getting moved or blown on the floor or something.

4 apps to check every day in College

I'm starting to realize the importance of staying connected. Wether it's an email from your professor, a phone call from work, or a trending topic on Twitter that your editor needs a brief on by noon, staying connected is the only way to stay on top of everything that goes on.

1. Blackboard - or whatever app your school uses to post grades, syllabi, and other class stuff. Check your grades, check due dates.

2.  NYTnow - We don't have all day, but no matter how busy we get, there's no excuse to not be informed about our world. With the NYTnow app, you get a bite-sized news feed you can finish on the way to your first class. Especially if you're writing news, you need to know what's going on. Yes it costs money, but $2 a week and a few minutes a day to be completely in the know is worth it if you ask me.

3. Your email... all of them - Take five minutes and connect your school email to your phone. I can't even tell you how helpful it is, especially with work. If I'm trying to get in contact with a source email is often the FIRST place I go to set up interviews. Also, if a professor decides to make a change to the syllabus at 10 the night before, you'll be totally in the know come class time.

4. Planner Plus - This app is freaking awesome. If you wanted you could make this your only planner. I only use it for scheduling because I prefer a paper planner, and I always feel a little rude pulling out my phone or ipad when adding in assignments during class. I put in all of my classes, and weekly meetings, then I'm able to schedule interviews, homework times and appointments. By looking at your weekly schedule as a whole, you really get a sense of how much time you have in your day and what you should/could be working on. You could use the calendar on your phone, but I like planner plus because there's more options for repeating dates.

Holy crap

college, stress

It's wednesday and I haven't done anything but school and work. I had to bail on something just to get a date night in with Adrian. I've been working for the paper a lot, and trying to study a lot. I decided to drop one of my classes already because 15 hours was just a little too much with my two jobs.

I really enjoy college, and working at the paper. It's hard to balance my life at school and my life with my family. Not to mention keeping up with my blog. To even write this, I had to schedule myself to wakeup three hours before my first class to squeeze in some time.

I don't have any early morning classes, so I feel like I'm going to start using the mornings as my study/blogging time. I really am a morning person when I get my sleep. I may even start to workout in the mornings like I had originally hoped.

I really really like working for the Shorthorn. I secretly love being busy, and I love getting the opportunity to learn more about what I love to do. Working on the Shorthorn is really pushing me to switch my major to journalism all together, but it's early in the semester.

I'm eager for everything to mellow out a little more. I don't like that I have to keep checking my schedule because I don't know what class I have next, or I have to do a double take at the directory.

A lot of kids from my high school are at UTA, so it's kinda nice knowing at least someone. But I'm starting to realize that just because we went to school together for four years doesn't mean we have to be friends. It's like this weird sense of freedom when I think about meeting new people. Everything is voluntary, If I wanted to sit in my classrooms all day and go straight home after class, I totally could. I'm realizing that college is what you make it. And by working at the Shorthorn, and striking up conversations in my speech class, I'm taking charge of my own social life...ok that might be a little dramatic, but you get the point.

The first days of college

I can't believe it's only been two days so far. I was working at the paper all week before school started, and between that, my job at LOFT, and taking 15 hours of classes I'm already beat from the first two days of school. I hit the weekend with a page long to do list and was starting to feel kinda nervous about this whole college thing.

Wednesday night, before the first day of school, I was working on the paper til four in the morning for production night. Before that I was at work, and before that I was working at the paper, all in one day. Yes it's crazy, but I realize not everyday will be like that. Like with a new job, it will take some time to get use to the pace of things in college. During my senior year I was taking seven electives out of eight classes, now I'm rushing from Poli Sci to Math, to my paper job, to English, to work.

I haven't exactly figured out how I want to organize my classes or my notes. I've just kinda been putting everything into my planner in Mav's orange and I'm going to hope for the best. Another hard thing I've noticed in just two days is I don't have a lot of time to eat healthy. I totally see how the freshman 15 can creep up on you. Most days I'm out of the house for both lunch and dinner, so I pack a lunch of whatever's at the house, then end up buying my dinner at work.

There's so much going on and I'm secretly in love with it all.

Taking Stock: August Week 4

I can't believe I'm finally starting college. It feels like 12 years in the making. Anywhere here's a little about my week.

Wanting: These Planner stamps from Studio Le 2 I ordered these today but there on pre-order :(

Watching: My Boyfriend play the Silent Hill demo and basically hiding under the covers the whole time.

Last week got really crazy because of last minute orientation at the Shorthorn for my new (second) job! Regardless I managed to get a few things done on my list.
  1. Book trip for Oklohoma - Adrian and I decided to make a day trip out of it so no need for a hotel room
  2. Buy a voice Recorder for school - I decided not to get a recorder, just a little too expensive.
  3. Clean my Room
  4. Figure out and write down goals for fall semester - I'll be doing a post later this week about them and my plans on reaching them.
  5. Track my H2O all week
  6. Finish Reading "Is Everyone hanging out without me" by Mindy Kaling
  7. Journal 3 times this week
  8. Post 4 times to the College girl daily
  9. Workout 3 times this week
  10. Go to Yoga 4 times this week - Made it twice, but again my schedule was changed.
On to this week which just so happens to be the first week of school!

Fancy Ponytail: A call to childhood

Go ahead and grab some headphones and hit play before reading the rest of this post...I'll wait. We good?

I'm jealous of people with little girls. I have a nephew, who's fun and all, but my sister would scream if I tried putting him in a cute little hair bow (sexist, but true). Little girls get all the fun, cool things when it comes to hair. I mean look at this!
 For a while like during junior year, I loved those REALLY big hair bows, think little mermaid style bow. I was determined that fun hair wasn't limited for ages 5 and under. My bow was black, and had a barrette, so I could put it high on my head and still have swoopy bangs. My co-workers at my old job always called it princess hair, and I thought this was as fancy as it got.

 Since I've become a manager at my new job, I've realized pretty pretty princess hair wasn't the best look to go for. It's childish, and looking like a kid makes people think you're a kid. Enter a comeback of the hair ribbon.

Ponytail + black ribbon = Casual Fancy

The Trick is keeping your ponytail low and loose. Every single day I go to work attempting to keep my hair down, but end up throwing it in a pony during the day. The problem would be looking professional from the neck down, and like I'm headed to the gym on top. Throw in a subtle black ribbon and you're feminine, and still put together.

Fall Leisure reading Book List: September- December

      I'm pretty sure I won't have as much time as I'd like once school starts to read for pleasure, but I'm determined to get at least one leisure book per month. Here's what I plan on reading for fun this fall.

1. Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay in September - I consider myself a feminist, Gay's essays go over feminism today and what we can do better. "Bad Feminist is a sharp, funny, and spot-on look at the ways in which the culture we consume becomes who we are, and an inspiring call-to-arms of all the ways we still need to do better." via Amazon

2. "Never let me go" by Kazu Ishiguro  in October - I don't know much about this one but buzzfeed says..."There’s nothing easy about reading Never Let Me Go, because it has an honesty that will make you question so many things. Like the social alienation of specific groups of people, and the painful fact that love can be lost or missed, all because of timing. It’s beautiful, haunting, and complex. Did I also mention it’s science fiction? Yeah, go read this." via. Buzzfeed

3."Make up: your guide to beauty, style, and success -- online and off" by Michelle Pham in November - I LOVE Michelle Pham, I've watched her videos for years and she announced a book this past Monday to be released October 21st. I already pre-ordered it for the special book cover.

4. "The Leftovers" by Tom Perrotta in December - By boyfriend and I have been watching this on HBO and I freaking love it. If you (or let's be honest your parents) don't have HBO grab the book for in between classes. The book isn't getting sparkling reviews on Amazon, but I'm hopeful.

On Jealousy

A friend from high school came into work today. She was telling me about how her roommate (at Arkansas University) decided to switch schools, and how she might get a double to herself. All I could think about how I plan on changing the curtains in my room at home...

In the next two weeks most all of my friends will be moving away for the semester to these exotic schools many states away. God I'm jealous. I wish I was buying shower caddies, and laundry bags, and hanging shoe racks. I wish I had to find ways to get along with an annoying roommate and I wish I had to eat that awful dining hall food.

But it's all worth it, I keep telling myself. I'm saving so much money by living at home, and by going to a local school. Deciding that I don't want thousands of dollars worth of student debt, shouldn't be this hard. 

There isn't even a reason I ought to feel jealous, for the most part there isn't anything that says one school is better than another when it comes to a degree. My dad always quotes Dave Ramsey saying a degree is a degree is a degree. But when I tell people that I'm going to my local university, why is it that people smile very kindly and say, "well that's a good school".

I don't think success depends on how great your school is, but rather how hard you work. Call me Horatio Alger, but I feel like I have the potential to succeed no matter what school I go to. I'm not going to some Ivy league college, for some super competitive degree.

My boyfriend and I are looking for an apartment, and maybe once we start moving and settling down ourselves I won't feel so bad. Honestly I don't want to go to school far away, I'm perfectly happy with where I am. I have a loving boyfriend, and a great job, and a college program that I can be proud of. But watching everyone pack up and leave gives me with a need for action. I'm eager to move out, to start school, to start my life the same way I see people around me starting theirs.

I'm sorry I offer no advise on jealousy, I know that's typically the type of thing I do. But maybe ya'll have some for me. How can I be jealous when I don't what what others have?

Fashion Inspiration: The black skirt

I was digging through my closet this week when I found a short, fit & flair black skirt that my mom use to wear. It's one of those classics that never go out of style, so I dug up some different ways to outfit this classic for fall.

A preppy, fitted button down and sweater combo with basic black booties. Preppy and very clean, I love the pleats on her skirt.

Casual and flirty denim, I'd probably skip the heels and go for some practical/sporty chucks, but that's just me.

Over sized sweater with pushed up sleeves and flats so it doesn't look too slouchy/sloppy.

We're seeing a pattern with the sweaters thing. With the blue being so dark, you'd think this would be a fashion rule breaker, but with the scarf and tights it really brightens up the entire outfit.

This outfit is really good for those transitional periods between summer and the cooler days of fall. I LOVE the brown belt on the black dress and the tucked button down. It's very clean and cinches at the waist.

Taking Stock: August

Each  month I set a few goals for myself. Here are July's goals and How I did on each of them.

  1. Post 15 times onto The College Girl daily
  2. Have $700 in my savings account
  3. Lose a total of 8 more pounds 
  4. Read one book on my Summer book list

2 out of 4 isn't terrible, but there's definitely room for improvement. 

August is going to be a VERY eventful month, I'll finally start my first semester of college, begin the process of moving into my own apartment, and my boyfriend's sister will be having her baby this month. 

  1. Work out 4X each week (three days of weights, one day of cardio) - I'm going to losely be following Erin Stern's plan from I won't be doing any supplementation besides an occasional protein shake, but I'll be following her workouts.
  2. Have $1200 in savings by Aug 31st 
  3. Re-work my budget to know exactly how much we can afford for our apartment. 
  4. COMPLETLY cut out soda and juices from my diet.

Getting Ready for first year of college

I'm really freaking excited to start my first year of college at UTA. Normally I go back to school with a sick feeling in my stomach, but this year I'm really pumped.

Here are a few things I'm doing to get ready for my first year of College

  1. Getting a new backpack - My oldie but goodie blue jansport I used for three years of high school is starting to fall apart. I'm going to invest in another for college. I'm upping the size from my high school one, but I'm torn between two of my new favorite colors, Army Green or Maroon. Which do ya'll think?                                                                                                                                        
  2. Getting all my textbooks - I ordered most of my textbooks from chegg, but I need to pick up a few from my campus book store. 
  3. Checking out all my classrooms - Adrian (the bae) has been going to UTA for a year now, and he promised to show me around campus. We're going to walk around and find all my classrooms one day before school starts so I'm not completely lost of the first day. You could also do this one of the days between moving in and classes starting.
  4. Picked up a new gym bag - I'm going to start working out at the MAC (Maverick Activity Center) before classes in the morning and I got this really cute gym bag to keep my day clothes in while I sweat it out. I'll probably keep my gym bag in my car after I workout so I don't have to carry it around during classes. 
  5. Getting all my appointments out of the way - There's going to be a lot going on during the fall, and I want to make sure I'm not completely over whelmed. To help out I'm getting all of those yearly checkups and appointments out of the way. I'm getting my OBGYN, my meningitis shot and physical, and my dreaded wisdom teeth appointments out of the way.
  6. Setting good habits - I've been pretty good about working out regularly this summer. Being in a habit of exercising now will help me come fall when I'm feeling a lot more stress. Now if I could just get that healthy eating down I'd have it made.
